For the last 10 years, I’ve been traveling the world. I’ve explored tropical beaches, dramatic mountain ranges, serene lakes—you name it. But no place has captivated me quite like Sithonia, the middle finger of the Halkidiki peninsula in Northern Greece.
This place is my soul’s getaway—raw natural beauty, crystal-clear waters and some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. If you’re looking for a destination that combines peace, adventure and flavor, this is it.
🍽️ Let’s Talk About Food: Greece on a Plate
You’ve probably heard of Greek staples like gyros, moussaka, tzatziki and souvlaki. But if there’s one thing the Greeks truly master—it’s grilled fish.
Charcoal-grilled fish in Greece is an art form. Just olive oil, sea salt and a blazing grill—nothing else. The result? Crispy skin, tender meat and a flavor that speaks of the sea and summer.
My go-to choices:
- 🐟 Tsipoura (Sea Bream)
- 🐟 Fagri (Red Sea Bream)
- 🐟 Lavraki (Sea Bass)
These are the most common fish you will find but also look for these options: dentex, cod (bakaliaros), scorpina – delicious and tender meat, and my favourite – mousmoulia (this is the Greek name of the fish, latin name is axillary seabream, look for a smaller sized fish with big eyes – simpy delicious).
🕵🏻♂️ Pro tip: Ask for the catch of the day and, when served, look for the special sauce to pour on the fish – a simple yet perfect mix of olive oil and lemon.
🏡 Where to Stay: Vourvourou vs Sarti
After more than a decade of visiting Sithonia, I still return to these two places again and again.
🌿 Vourvourou
The place where I first fell in love with Greece back in 2011. A peaceful, green paradise with a village feel.
- ✅ Quiet and relaxing
- ✅ Ideal for couples and nature lovers
- ✅ Many beachfront studios like Studios Efi offer great value
- ❌ Limited restaurants and not very walkable
🏙️ Sarti
A livelier option with more activity and convenience.
- ✅ Perfect for families and larger groups
- ✅ Dozens of tavernas and cafes, many by the sea
- ✅ Pedestrian-friendly with lots of souvenir shops
- ❌ More built-up and touristy feel
My choice? Still Vourvourou—its laid-back vibe and lush surroundings are unbeatable.

📍 Armenistis
- 🍽️ Ammos Restaurant – Try the moussaka, tyrosalata, fried zucchini and daily fresh fish.
📍 Sarti Area
- 🌅 5 Steps in the Sand – My absolute favorite in Sithonia. Located just after Sykia Beach, this restaurant offers fresh seafood, stunning views and unforgettable sunsets.
- 🎵 Vorinakis – If you are looking for live Greek music, this is your place! The food they serve is traditional Greek and it is delicious! It is located in Sarti square.
- 🌊 Ta Vrahakia – If you are a seafood lover, you should visit this restaurant! Located right on the beach, they serve great food ranging from traditional Greek to fresh fish of the day. The red sea bream (fagri) we ordered was the best we’ve tried in our trip this year (2025)!
