Crete, the largest island in Greece, isn’t just a stunning destination for breathtaking views and rich history—it’s a paradise for foodies. From the freshest seafood to unique local specialties, Crete’s culinary treasures left a lasting impression on me. Here’s my personal journey through the island’s most unforgettable dishes and the places that made them special.
Grilled Fish
I love fresh fish, and in Crete, it’s everywhere. After trying fish in so many places around the world, I can confidently say the Greeks prepare it the best. At Dimos, located in the old Venetian harbor, I had my first main course: grilled sea bream.
Served with a drizzle of olive oil, parsley, chopped red onion, and crispy chips, the simplicity of this dish was its brilliance. The fish was gently grilled over charcoal. I loved it so much that I returned to Dimos three times during my trip. The food was fantastic, and the friendly service made the experience even better.
Another standout seafood dish I tried was grilled sardines at Vasiliko Restaurant in Chania. The fish was fresh, tender, and perfectly grilled, served in a bath of fresh olive oil with some freshly chopped parsley and red onion.
Cretan Salad
Cretan salad isn’t your typical Greek salad—it’s heartier, fresher, and bursting with flavor. My first taste of this unique salad was at Dimos, and it became my go-to dish. The combination of crunchy barley rusks (paximadi), creamy myzithra cheese, and juicy tomatoes, all topped with a generous drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, created an unforgettable flavor.
Coming from Bulgaria, where we take our salads seriously, it’s a strong statement when I say this was the best salad I’ve ever had.
Dakos: Crete’s Most Iconic Dish
Dakos quickly became one of my favorite Cretan dishes. It’s a simple yet flavorful combination of barley rusks, fresh tomatoes, myzithra cheese, and olive oil. Some versions I tried were topped with parsley, capers, or red onion for extra layers of flavor. It’s no wonder this dish is ranked as Crete’s number one specialty—it truly showcases the island’s best ingredients.
Mountain Goat
One of the most memorable food experiences of my life happened in a small mountain village called Drakona. I had seen Mark Wiens’ video about a traditional tavern called Ntounias and knew I had to visit. Driving two hours to get there was absolutely worth it.
As soon as I arrived, I knew I was in the right place. Pots simmered in the middle of the street, and a rooster wandered close to my table. The owner greeted me warmly and brought out the best bread I’ve ever had, served with olive oil and salt. Together, we decided I’d try two meats: lamb and goat.
The lamb was tender but overpowered by rosemary. However, the goat—known as katsikaki in Greek—was extraordinary. It was tender, flavorful, and hands down the best meat I’ve ever eaten. I also ordered a Cretan salad, which came with a twist: roasted potatoes, pomegranate seeds, and a unique, refreshing flavor. This meal was the highlight of my trip.
Other Must-Try Dishes in Crete
- Souvlaki: Classic Greek skewered meat, perfect as a quick and tasty snack.
- Moussaka: A rich, layered dish with eggplant, minced meat, and creamy béchamel sauce.
