When we first landed in Cancun, we were unsure whether to stay in the Hotel Zone or explore the city center. Like many visitors, we were advised to stay within the resort area for safety. But I’m a local food lover, and nothing excites me more than mixing with locals and trying authentic dishes.
So, we decided to dive deeper into the culture—and it turned out to be the highlight of our trip.
Downtown Cancun: Where the Street Food Shines
Cancun’s city center is lively, welcoming, and packed with street vendors offering some of the best food we’ve ever tasted. From elote (grilled corn) and churros to marquesitas and salbutes, the streets are a paradise for foodies.
But the absolute star?
Tacos de Cochinita Pibil—a traditional Yucatán dish made with achiote-marinated pork, slow-cooked until tender and served on handmade tortillas. The flavor was rich, juicy, and unforgettable.
We followed up with more delicious tacos, like tacos al pastor, made from spiced pork cooked on a vertical spit, and salbutes, light fried tortillas topped with meat and pickled onions.
👉 Top pick: 📍Antojitos Yucatecos
You’ll find this local gem in downtown Cancun’s main square—just look for the stone tables. We loved it so much, we went back several times during our stay.

Chichen Itzá and a Delicious Buffet
One of the days, we took an organized trip to Chichen Itzá, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The ancient ruins were impressive, but we have to admit—the heat was intense.
Luckily, the tour also included a cenote swim, which was incredibly refreshing and gave us the energy to keep going. After a long, adventurous day, we wrapped it up with a Mexican buffet that was honestly one of the best meals of our trip.
The spread included:
- Cochinita pibil
- Steamed rice
- Tamales
- Beans
- Taquitos
- Salsas
- And of course, warm tortillas so you could build your own tacos
We just couldn’t stop eating. Everything was packed with flavor and made with care.

Island Eats: Isla Mujeres
We also visited Isla Mujeres—twice, in fact. The island is not only beautiful but home to amazing local food.
The top spot for us was 📍Lonchería Alexia y Geovanny, a small family-run restaurant near the center. I had the grilled fish fillet, served with rice, mashed beans, and salad. It was simple but full of flavor. My girlfriend enjoyed the garlic shrimp, and I also tried the white sauce chicken enchiladas, which were creamy, cheesy, and delicious.
We paired our food with refreshing local drinks while enjoying the laid-back vibe of the island. All in all this was the best restaurant we visited for our week stay in Mexico. Delicious food, great value for money and friendly service!

Beachside Dining at Playa Norte
Our favorite beach in Mexico? Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres—without a doubt.
We spent hours relaxing at 📍Green Demon Beach Club, which offers food, drinks, and shady seating so you don’t need to rent an umbrella (which can be pricey). The location was perfect, and the service was friendly.
The food? Solid—4 out of 5 stars. But the experience of sipping a margarita while enjoying freshly made guacamole with a view of the turquoise Caribbean was something we’ll never forget.
Final Thoughts
If you’re headed to Cancun, don’t limit yourself to the resorts. Venture out to taste authentic Mexican street food, explore historic wonders, and enjoy the warm hospitality of locals.
From tacos in downtown Cancun to fresh seafood in Isla Mujeres, and a delicious buffet near Chichen Itzá, this trip was full of unforgettable flavors and experiences.
