Many years ago, I was scrolling through YouTube late at night when I stumbled upon a recipe that caught my eye—Shakshuka. A rich, saucy, and perfectly spiced dish with poached eggs cooked right in the sauce. It looked simple, comforting, and packed with flavor.
The next day at work, I couldn’t stop talking about it. “I’m going to the market after work to get all the ingredients and make it tonight,” I told my colleagues. To my surprise, they got just as excited as I was. “We’ll do it too,” they said. “And then we’ll compare results!”
Suddenly, this wasn’t just about me trying a new dish—it turned into a friendly kitchen challenge.
The Shakshuka Cook-Off
That evening, we all went home, got our ingredients, and got to work. The kitchen filled with the scent of sautéing onions, garlic, and warm spices. The tomatoes simmered into a thick, flavorful sauce, and the eggs nestled perfectly into their little pockets.
The next day, we proudly shared our results. Some added extra heat, others experimented with toppings, but one thing was clear—everyone was hooked! I was so happy to have introduced my friends to this incredible dish.
Authentic & Easy Shakshuka Recipe
Shakshuka is one of my all-time favorite egg dishes. Originally from North Africa, it has become a staple across the Middle East. And the best part? It’s super easy to make!

- 2 peppers, chopped
- 1 large tomato, chopped
- Olive oil
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper
- ½ tsp cumin
- 4 eggs
- Fresh parsley, chopped
- Bulgarian sheep cheese (or feta), crumbled
Instructions:
1️⃣ Heat a good amount of olive oil in a pan.
2️⃣ Cook the onion and garlic until fragrant.
3️⃣ Add the peppers and sauté until softened.
4️⃣ Stir in the chopped tomato and cook for a few minutes.
5️⃣ Season with paprika, cayenne pepper, and cumin. Let it simmer for 10 minutes.
6️⃣ Make small wells in the sauce and gently crack in the eggs.
7️⃣ Cover with a lid and cook until the eggs reach your preferred doneness. Tap the egg whites gently to check if they’re set.
